Solings at Fort William – Lochaber Yacht Club

Lochaber Yacht Club (LYC) is situated on Loch Linnhe, a sea loch below the mighty Ben Nevis and the Highland town of Fort William.

The word linnhe is derived from the Gaelic word linne which means “pool”. Loch Linne has two parts. The part upstream of the town of Corran, called An Linne Dhubh (the black pool), used to be called Loch Abar.

The part downstream from Corran is known as An Linne Sheileach (the salty pool)

Lochaber Yacht club in lies on the southern shore of the upper part of the loch, An Linne Dhubh which is 15 kilometres long and on average 2 kilometres across. Fort William is just 15 minutes’ walk away at the northernmost end of the loch.

LYC is an RYA training centre and boasts a modern newly built clubhouse in a beautiful setting. The original clubhouse burnt down in 2006 and was rebuilt and reopened in 2008. While the clubhouse has no sleeping accommodation there is a huge  range of local accommodation available within walking distance including hotels and B&Bs.

The is an “A” from for hoisting boats and a concrete slip for launching.

The first Soling arrived at Fort William in 1987 and the fleet gradually increased to a peak of eight boats in 2006. During this time the club has hosted the Soling National Championships three times.

There are still four Solings at the club and at least one boat has ventured south of the border to Kielder, Windermere and Rutland.

The club have an “A” frame and hoist which allows an easy transfer of boats from road to launching trailers. During the sailing season the boats are kept afloat on swinging moorings and lifted out at regular intervals for a bottom scrub.
